The Crucible of Your Own Experience (KAB-2)

Fine-Tuning the Clinical Applications of Mindfulness: Continuing Education for Health Professionals and Meditators
Health professionals in medicine, psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy are increasingly using mindfulness in their work. As defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn, “mindfulness is remembering to pay attention on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.” In this way, we can catalyze learning, growing, healing, and transformation across our lifespan with a willingness to turn toward rather than away. The workshop is designed to help counter habitual denial, experiential avoidance, and maladaptive coping behaviors, by offering ways to effectively turn towards the actuality of what is happening in the present moment, even when it is frightening, unpleasant and unwanted.

Created to support health professionals currently utilizing mindfulness, the workshop also provides a powerful introduction for those professionals considering mindfulness as an addition to their repertoire. By utilizing everything that arises in life—the good, the bad, and the ugly—all blended into the crucible of first-person experience, participants will understand how everything becomes the teacher. This allows us to put lessons learned to good use in authentic and imaginative ways. Participants will explore the creative interface between personal experience and mindfulness, including formal practice, to develop appropriate ways to guide patients/clients in cultivating their own mindfulness.
