Course Description
This conference focuses on how neuroscience complements traditional therapeutic practices and explores how to enhance deeper levels of integration in ourselves and in our clients. The first day will focus on our development as therapists. The second day will highlight recent neuroscience contributions to our understanding of personality and psychotherapy.
Day One
Psychotherapy from the Inside Out: The Mind of the Therapist – Neural Integration and Well-Being in Our Own Lives -Dan Siegel, M.D
It is the clinician’s own level of receptive awareness and integration that is at the heart of the therapeutic process. As we discover more about the deeply social nature of the brain, we move towards remarkable new insights into what traditional notions of being receptive means in the context of human relationships. On this first day you’ll learn about nine levels of neural integration and how to work at each level, both in your own self-development and with your clients. We’ll explore the new findings about the mirror neuron system and how the circuits involved in emotional resonance and empathy can enhance your understanding of others and of your self. We’ll pay special attention to the role of “mindsight” –the interweaving of insight and empathy–and how it leads to changes in emotional self-regulation, attuned communication, and mental well-being.

Day Two
Neurobiology, Personality and Psychotherapy -Glen Gabbard, M.D. & Dan Siegel, M.D.
With internationally renowned educator, Glen Gabbard, M.D., we’ll explore new findings in the neurobiology of personality and their impact on the practice of psychotherapy. The lens of neuroscience reveals how patterns of perceptual bias, emotional response, and interpersonal behavior can be more clearly understood by examining the interplay of psychodynamic thinking and some recent neurobiological research, especially as it applies to the psychotherapy of personality disorders. Therapists can benefit from these new discoveries by gaining powerful insights into the nature of the therapeutic action of psychotherapy. Avenues of change can be seen to emerge from understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of personality.
Second Day Overview:
