Learning Experience Description:

The Agencies and Courts Putting Families Front and Center learning experience combines digital story videos and a discussion guide to drive conversations about family-centered practices and multidisciplinary collaboration. This LE challenges audiences to think critically about adopting family-centered approaches and offering coordinated supports that contribute to family engagement and family well-being and, ultimately, support family reunification.

The LE builds from two sets of digital stories created for the 2020 National Foster Care Month (NFCM) website. Each set of stories creates a mosaic of a family’s journey through child welfare, particularly court interactions from multiple perspectives.

The LE discussion guide engages agency and court audiences to consider the stories from different viewpoints and reflect on how family-centered, strengths-based approaches and coordinated supports help parents achieve their case goals. To stimulate critical thinking and conversation, the guide describes two sets of structured activities and discussion questions:

„  “Chutes and ladders” prompts audiences to consider which actions and behaviors support parents in moving toward completion of their case goals (“up the ladders”) and which ones may counteract intentions (“down the chutes”).

„  “Wraparound supports” explores how coordinated, multidisciplinary support can help families and affect outcomes. The activities encourage audiences to reflect on the various viewpoints presented in the mosaic and those that may be missing.

Through these activities, the guide asks audiences to identify strategies and action steps for improving family-centered practice and collaborative approaches in their agency or courtroom.
