Research tells us that the frequency of visitation between parents and children makes a big difference. Children who are visited often by their birth parents are more likely to be reunited and spend less time in foster care.

Foster parents may facilitate family reunification through both mentoring birth parents and supporting their visitation. Developing a positive relationship between foster and birth parents may allow children to avoid the stress of divided loyalties and position foster parents to play a supportive role after reunification (Lewis & Callaghan, 1993; Sanchirico & Jablonka, 2000).

For National Reunification Month 2018, the Center highlighted programs that use Fostering Relationships. Fostering Relationships, a part of the Quality Parenting Initiative, is an approach to visitation in child welfare based on attachment theory that focuses both on improving parenting and supporting partnership between the foster parent and the birth parent. It is an approach adapted from Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up for Visitation (ABC-V), a research-based visitation intervention developed and piloted by Mary Dozier, Ph.D., and the Youth Law Center. ABC-V is an extension of Attachment Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC), an evidence-based parenting intervention for caregivers of infants and toddlers who have experienced early adversity.
