What You Need to Know about the Treatment of Dissociative Disorders: Cutting-edge Research and Clinical Implications

Bethany Brand will share her experience of shifting from doubt to acceptance of the validity of the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder (DID), and developing into an expert on dissociative disorders (DD). She will discuss her series of treatment studies called the Treatment of Patients with Dissociative Disorders (TOP DD) studies. These prospective international treatment studies show that phasic, trauma-based treatment is associated with decreased symptoms of PTSD and dissociation, self-harm, suicide attempts, hospitalizations, and treatment costs. Dr. Brand will present the findings from the newest, cutting edge TOP DD Network Study, which is a novel web-based psychoeducation program for DD patients and their therapists. This program aims to enhance DD patients’ ability to regulate emotions, manage symptoms, and stabilize safety. It also teaches clinicians a conceptualization of DD patients’ unsafe behaviors, and basic interventions that can be useful in stabilizing DD patients. Using patients’ journaling, artwork, and research surveys, Dr. Brand will share patients’ perspectives on the experience of surviving trauma by having developed disowned, unintegrated self-states, and their reactions to participating in the TOP DD Network program.

This workshop offers 3 CE hours.
