Transforming Trauma and Reclaiming the Core Self Through Fierce Love
SueAnne Piliero, Ph.D. is a senior faculty and a founding member of the AEDP Institute (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy). She teaches Fierce Love to a broad range of clinical audiences across the US and around the world. Clinicians are drawn to Fierce Love because of its self-evident power and efficacy to heal even the most hardened and traumatized of patients, which is consistently demonstrated in her powerful, clinical videotapes.
Dr. Piliero has taught previously at the Cape Cod Institute and the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium, and her clinical work was chosen to be featured by the American Psychological Association (APA) as part of their video series featuring renowned psychotherapists doing live demonstrations with real patients. Most recently she wrote a chapter in the book “Undoing Aloneness & the Transformation of Suffering into Flourishing AEDP 2.0” for the APA titled, “Fierce Love: Championing the Core Self to Transform Trauma and Pathogenic States(Piliero, 2021)”
She is known for her warm, open, engaging teaching style and her ability to communicate complex topics with humor and clarity. Dr. Piliero received her doctorate from Adelphi University and her master’s degree in human development and psychology from Harvard. She teaches, supervises, provides individual and group consultation and is in private practice in New York City.

Course Content Level
Introductory Content Level – Open to practitioners of all levels
Working with trauma and attachment wounds requires not just learning the theory or techniques; it requires boldly bringing ourselves into the healing equation to break through entrenched defenses and toxic shame. It requires going to the depths of hopelessness with our clients to show that they are loveable in this place of emptiness.
In short, it requires what Dr. Piliero terms Fierce Love. Fierce Love is embodied in the therapists’ relational boldness in defense of the core self that communicates to our patients that they were and are still worthy of love, no matter how broken, shamed, or disconnected from themselves they may feel.
In this workshop, using lecture, videotape of actual therapy sessions, and live demos, we will explore in-depth how the Fierce Love therapist pierces and melts the defenses and toxic shame states by standing in on behalf of the patient’s Core Self to guide the patient back home to their birthright of love.
