Child Welfare Virtual Expo 2018 - Restore, Refresh and Reenergize: Organizational Strategies to Address Secondary Traumatic Stress in the Workforce

The third annual Virtual Expo supports workforce development and consists of materials and presentations around “Fostering a Healthy Workforce.” Whether learning as an individual or group, child welfare staff will have the opportunity to hear from experts, access valuable resources, connect new knowledge to their work, and identify goals for improving their own practice and the work of their teams.

Providing services to vulnerable families is complex, demanding, and inherently exposes workers to traumatic situations. This exposure can result in Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS), which takes a toll on staff and has consequences for both the agency and the children and families being served. This skills seminar focuses on organizational strategies for providing ongoing support to staff working in a trauma-exposed environment. Based on Secondary Traumatic Stress in Child Welfare Practice: Trauma-Informed Guidelines for Organizations, the session highlights concrete, trauma-informed steps agencies can take to assess secondary traumatic stress and build resiliency among staff. It also discusses organizational measures to address coverage and caseloads; empowerment and advocacy; support systems; and recognition, team building, and peer support.

Presenter

Cambria Rose Walsh, L.C.S.W.

Cambria Rose Walsh has worked for the Chadwick Center for Children and Families at Rady Children’s Hospital for 17 years and is the Project Co-Director of the Child Welfare Trauma-Informed Practices, Program, and Policy Center. Her work focuses on revising the existing Child Welfare Trauma Training Toolkit and working with child welfare systems across the United States to become more trauma-informed. She previously managed the Chadwick Trauma-Informed Systems Dissemination and Implementation Project, which focused on implementing trauma-informed practices in five child welfare jurisdictions, and she managed the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare. Ms. Walsh has worked with counties and agencies on the implementation of SafeCare® and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, and has worked to develop training and support for agencies around addressing the issue of secondary traumatic stress. Using her experience as a former therapist for children affected by abuse and their families, Ms. Walsh developed a training program that focused on educating child welfare workers about domestic violence and its impact on families and provided direct support to the workers during home visits.
