While some aspects of the workshop may be didactic, the bulk of the personal interaction is process-oriented much like one would experience in the here-and-now, real-time moments of individual, couples, and group psychotherapy. Participants are encouraged to relate with direct sharing of experience, and attunement to self and other. Individuals take personal risks via self-reflection as a way of exploring the development of the therapeutic relationship and acknowledging their countertransference, the role of the unconscious and owning the subjective nature of therapeutic interpretations of the others (i.e., the patient’s) thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
This workshop will provide participants with several experiences based upon their choices: 1) as an observer (or participant if participating as a volunteer) of a morning fishbowl process group; and, 2) as a participant in an afternoon process group led by co-therapy teams, two of which will be a continuation of process groups that begin the previous evening. Participants will observe how group leader(s) establish a secure space, and whether or not this aids in people’s desire to take risks within the group. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to discuss leaders’ interventions and missteps and how these may have affected participants.
This is a full-day workshop. Attending both morning and afternoon sessions are required to receive your continuing education units: 6 CEUs will be given for attending Saturday. 9 CEUs will be given if you are also in one of the Friday evening process groups.
