COURSE OVERVIEW

This stimulating and sophisticated course is designed to provide psychotherapists, child custody evaluators and domestic violence intervention providers with an advanced examination of the issue of domestic violence. Many domestic violence workshops today focus primarily on the sociopolitical aspects of violence and advocate an educational approach to intervention. This workshop is oriented towards mental health professionals and others interested in an ecological, or bio-psycho-social approach to assessment and treatment of perpetrators and victims.

YOU WILL LEARN

  • The clinical assessment of male and female perpetrators of family violence, risk assessment, an attachment theory based conceptualization of the treatment process, the neurobiology of violence and trauma and specific treatment interventions for violence and trauma resolution based on attachment theory. The workshop will combine didactic material with clinical case discussion to bring alive the clinical applicability of the concepts presented. This course is taught at an intermediate/advanced level and although some elementary concepts will be addressed, it is assumed that participants will have some professional experience or educational knowledge of working with domestic violence victims, perpetrators or their families.

  • Clinical assessment of male and female perpetrators of family violence

  • Risk assessment

  • Attachment theory based conceptualization of the DV treatment process
