Dr. Bessel van der Kolk begins this rewarding article by reviewing the background of trauma research from the 19th century to the present. He clearly outlines the ways in which traumatic stress affects the central nervous system, and describes how these abnormalities account for the "bimodal" symptoms seen in PTSD patients. Finally, he discusses how psychopharmacological treatment can help traumatized people distinguish current reality from past trauma.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk reviews the background of trauma research, from Pierre Janet and Ivan Pavlov in the 19th century, to the recent work of Peter Lang, Lawrence Kolb and Joseph LeDoux. He clearly outlines the ways in which traumatic stress affects the central nervous system and describes how these abnormalities account for the "bimodal" symptoms seen in PTSD patients. Finally, he discusses how psychopharmacological treatment can help traumatized people distinguish current reality from past trauma. Though his use of technical language is occasionally challenging, "The Body Keeps the Score" is very rewarding to read.
