Dr. Luskin presents his research-based evidence for forgiveness in the promotion of mental and physical health. He teaches students how to employ forgiveness in working with the most wounded of clients.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The importance of practicing forgiveness has been extolled in religious traditions for centuries, but only recently has the attention of psychology turned to forgiveness. It is unfortunate that many excellent therapists lack training in the critical skill of forgiveness. Good clinical research is showing the virtues of forgiveness in the promotion of mental and physical health, and when therapists add forgiveness to their treatment menus they improve their ability to help their clients.

A STORY OF FORGIVENSS

In 1999, Dr. Luskin and colleagues brought together the first of two groups of Northern Irish mothers who had lost a son in the religious strife in that country. These were women who had, in some cases, been suffering the pain of this loss for twenty years. Their stories were heartbreaking. Losing their sons in random acts of fatal violence had left them with deep and seemingly lifelong emotional scars.

In the pre-treatment assessment they had elevated levels of depression, anger, and both emotional and physical distress. In the post-treatment measurements the group showed significant improvement in every variable measured, and continued to demonstrate this improvement in follow-up evaluations after they returned home. This workshop describes in detail the forgiveness process offered to these parents, and how to implement it in the treatment of blaming, hurt, and angry clients. Forgiveness does not mean condoning the behavior of those who have hurt us, it is a choice that we make to release our past and heal our present.
