Dr. Hughes is one of the best if not the best clinician in the field working with children and adolescents. He demonstrates his remarkable therapeutic gifts in this course, offering insights into how he attains such a profound level of connection and success with the most resistant kids.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This workshop is for clinicians, counselors, and caregivers seeking answers to questions about certain child and adolescent behaviors--relationship avoidance, fearfulness in relating to peers and adults, and escalating acting out when faced with limit setting/behavioral consequences.

Dan Hughes PhD, brings insights and understanding to these symptomatic behaviors through the lens of attachment theory and research. Offering a rare combination of both theoretician and master therapist, Dr. Hughes will illuminate for attendees how to apply attachment theory in successfully intervening with troubled children. Bridging the gap between Bowlby, Siegel, and Schore, Dr. Hughes explicates the subtleties of working with troubled children in a step-by-step process of timed interventions and relationship building.

COURSE OUTLINE

Dan Hughes approach to treatment is inherently compassionate and respectful. He eschews behavioral-based models in favor of a more complex and empathic approach, that gets the child's attention through emotional contact.

Parents, caregivers and families are included in Dr. Hughes work with troubled children playing a very active part in the treatment, and are invited to take this course with the recommendation of their counselor/therapist or support agency.

HOME STUDY COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • To learn the importance of a multitude of attachment-based concepts that go into this approach to treatment: affective attunement--listening from the heart and joining in a way that promotes and catalyzes positive change, affective regulation--meeting the client emotionally, and guiding them into self-regulation, and building a cohesive narrative through creating an attachment history of loss and abandonment.
  • To learn to apply ideas formulated in attachment theory: affect regulation, relationship attunement, creating a cohesive narrative, to their work with attachment disordered children, by first understanding the nature of attachment disorders and secondly by learning how and when to intervene.
  • To apply basic principles of attachment theory and research to the psychotherapy of children and youth.

  • To develop a deeper appreciation of nonverbal communication and its impact on the therapeutic relationship and process.

  • To utilize the co-regulation of affect and attention during the process of co-constructing a coherent narrative.

  • To incorporate the attachment sequence of attunement/disruption/repair into the therapeutic process.
