Dan Siegel applies his ideas in interpersonal neurobiology to parenting, creating a very readable and useful book for clinicians to refer to clients with children. This is book that reflection, and the process of self discovery that encourages empathy, compassion, and understanding between parent and child.

(Book not included with course)

This home study course will provide an overview of a neurobiological and interpersonal understanding of the human mind and how if develops from the early years onward. Practical suggestions are woven throughout this book for parents, educators, and therapists working with children and parents that are designed to 1) increase self-understanding, and 2) to enhance interpersonal relationships.

This interdisciplinary view of development examines the nature of how mental processes emerge from the activity of the brain as it is shaped by interpersonal experiences. An "interpersonal neurobiology" of the developing mind has applications for a wide range of individuals who are involved in helping children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. The objectives of the seminar will be to offer parents, educators and mental health practitioners an overview of this exciting new field and its applications to understanding the science of nurturing and the mechanisms by which the mind develops across the lifespan.

Why an emphasis on self-understanding? Research has shown that the most robust predictor of a child’s security of attachment is the caregiver’s autobiographical narrative coherence, that is, how they have made sense of their life. Deepening self-understanding in the context of interpersonal relationships that reinforce authentic emotional relating can help transform an adult’s attachment to a free, flexible form of security. By deepening an understanding of basic aspects of our lives, such as how we remember, perceive, feel, communicate, create stories, attach, and repair ruptures in our relationships, it is possible to help those who care for children to enhance their relationships and the children’s developmental outcomes. In addition, such deepened self-understanding can enhance adult relationships and be fundamental to the resolution of past trauma and loss.
