Conference Overview

From time immemorial, healing has been regarded as a sacred art. This central dimension of healing is being appreciated anew, and it is now apparent that both client and therapist can benefit from acknowledging a spiritual component to their work. This conference will bring together some of the foremost authorities on spirituality, psychology and meditation to explore both the conceptual and practical aspects of the sacred art of healing. Speakers will examine both Eastern and Western perspectives, review theories, assess research, explore applications, and offer practices. Participants will benefit both personally and professionally by expanding their understanding and application of spiritual principles and by deepening their own spiritual practice. The renewed appreciation of the importance of spirituality to healing is supported by a rapidly expanding body of research. An engaged spiritual life is associated with more rapid healing, improved physical and psychological health, and greater well being and life satisfaction. Likewise, spiritual practices such as meditation offer diverse benefits. These include enhanced relationships, well-being and psychological maturity, as well as improved clinical skills such as sensitivity and empathy. Established therapeutic applications include treatment of multiple stress, addictive, and psychosomatic disorders. In light of these findings and the fact that spiritual concerns are important to many clients, familiarity with spiritual issues and practices is fast becoming an essential element of clinical competence.
