EFT is one of the most empirically validated couple’s therapy approaches in North America. EFT moves couples from distress to recovery in 10-12 sessions for 70-75% of couples. Dr. Johnson is one of the masters. What a treat to be taught by her and to listen to her voice in clips of actual recorded sessions! This is by far one of the very best seminars offered.

Course Overview

This course demonstrates how emotional experience in relationships can be used to reconstruct intimate bonds. EFT, an approach to marital therapy, puts love and emotion back into the process, offering a model for short-term therapy with couples in acute distress. Dr. Johnson outlines nine steps in the change process, describing intervention points and specific ways to address emotion that creates new interactions between partners.

These therapeutic applications are described within the context of attachment theory. EFT views marital distress as maintained by absorbing states of negative affect and attachment insecurity. This affect both reflects and strengthens rigid, constricted patterns of interaction in couples, such as the criticize and withdraw cycle. Dr. Johnson explains how these defensive patterns undermine safe emotional engagement which is important for secure bonding, and the therapeutic steps necessary for change

EMPIRICAL EVIVENCE

EFT is one of the most empirically validated couples therapy approaches in North America. A substantial body of research on EFT outlines the following conclusions: EFT is associated with large treatment effect sizes. EFT moves couples from distress to recovery in 10-12 sessions for 70-75% of cases. EFT creates improvements in 90% of couples coming for therapy. EFT is successful with a range of marital difficulties including partners with depression or chronic illness.

STRENGTHS OF EFT

  • Based on clear, explicit conceptualizations of marital distress and adult love. These conceptualizations are supported by empirical research on the nature of marital distress and adult attachment.

  • Specific change strategies and interventions

  • The change process and change events have been mapped into nine steps and three change events.

  • EFT is validated by 15 years of empirical research including research on the change process and predictors of success.

  • EFT is applicable to a wide range of difficulties in couples.

GOALS OF EFT
