Feeling Good Now! (BUD0A)

How to Overcome Depression and Boost Self-Esteem

Workshop Description

When Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy was first published in 1980, most people had never heard of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Now CBT has become the most widely practiced and intensively researched form of therapy in the United States. Although the initial techniques developed in the mid-1970s have been extraordinarily helpful to individuals suffering from depression and low self-esteem, numerous innovations since that time have revolutionized the treatment. The skillful use of these new approaches often results in rapid recovery. In fact, many patients who used to require months of intensive therapy can now be helped in just a handful of sessions, and will sometimes respond in a single session. In this exciting new workshop, Dr. Burns will illustrate treatment innovations that focus on five vitally important areas: assessment, empathy, motivation, technique, and the structure of the treatment itself. He will illustrate how to treat patients with unipolar and bipolar mood disorders and will bring these new methods to life with live demonstrations with audience volunteers.

Most of us occasionally succumb to the same feelings of insecurity, self -criticism and self-doubt that plague our patients, particularly when we're working with challenging, oppositional, or suicidal clients. It's easy to feel anxious, ashamed, inadequate, angry, frustrated, and overwhelmed when treating these individuals. Of course, we all experience conflicts and disappointments from time to time in our relationships with colleagues, family members, and friends as well. Dr. Burns will emphasize the importance of healing yourself if you want to offer truly effective treatment for your patients. Come prepared to roll up your sleeves and learn from one of America's most popular workshop leaders.
