Awakening Greatness in Children

The Nurtured Heart Approach for Channeling Intensity to Immensity

A child’s intensity is a gift that can be nurtured and awakened to greatness. Unfortunately, many parents, teachers and therapists find themselves struggling with children who are so often more intense than ever in response to a world that is ever-more tightly wound.

The quiet epidemics of our times are the millions of loving and kind parents and teachers whose despair is the profound lose of relationship with the children in their midst… parents giving up in the face of growing adversity and teachers quitting the profession in record numbers out of frustration. Along with well-intentioned therapists who are too often limited by methods that barely make a difference we are seeing droves of children fall off the conveyer belt of education and fall into risky situations and choices…and risky recommendations via our attempts to help them mange their intensity.

Faced with problematic behaviors from an intense child, most adults react by increasing the severity of normal and conventional methods. Despite the best of intentions, the more that adults attempt common and traditional methods of parenting, teaching and counseling, the worse the situation can easily become. Faced with escalating acting out, children with stronger life-force are often diagnosed as ADHD or other such behavior disorders on the first doctor’s visit and prescribed medication that can have physical, psychological and social side effects—simply because there has not been an approach that consistently helps them to use their intensity successfully.

The culprits are the methods most people have at their disposal…not the parents, teacher or the child. Approaches that are designed for the average child are not powerful or encompassing enough to have a transformative effect on children with inability to manage strong impulses or emotions. With a powerful enough method that very same life force that has gone awry can be the very source of greatness.

The Nurtured Heart Approach has been proven to create transformation in inspiring and enduring ways. The child learns to believe in who they really are and to accrue Inner Wealth – so that they are now fully able to use their intelligence and intensity in great ways.

In past decades our culture believed in putting intense children into rigorous activities so as to wear them out. The Nurtured Heart Approach you will enable you to see your impact in helping these children channel their intensity into greatness. Then, instead of acting-out in ways that alarm these same children will inherently act-out greatness—what everyone wanted in their heart or hearts all along.

Join us for this workshop and you’ll leave with a powerful understanding and skill-set that you can use immediately to help any child to flourish, thrive, and to fully engage life in positive ways.

Presenter

Howard Glasser

Howard Glasser is the Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Success Foundation and creator of The Nurtured Heart Approach®. He is dedicated to awakening the greatness in all children and in particular the world’s intense and challenging children.

The approach’s core methodologies, which were born out of his extensive clinical work, effectively inspire difficult children to channel their intensity in successful ways. Worldwide, hundreds of thousands of parents, educators, and treatment and child-advocacy agencies have used this approach with great results.

Howard is the author of Transforming the Difficult Child, currently the top-selling book on ADHD; Notching Up the Nurtured Heart Approach: The New Inner Wealth Initiative, a leading book on school interventions; and All Children Flourishing, on using the Approach with all children, difficult or not. Four of his eight books are in the top one percent of all books on Amazon, confirming the need and relevance of his message and methodology. He is currently working on his latest release entitled Igniting Greatness.

Howard has been called one of the most influential living persons working to reduce children’s reliance on psychiatric medications. His work also supports children in resisting addictive substances. He has been a featured guest on CNN, a consultant for 48 Hours, and most recently highlighted in Esquire Magazine. He has consulted for numerous psychiatric, judicial, and educational programs. He currently instructs educators, parents and therapists in this work through live presentations and Internet-based courses via the Nurtured Heart Online University. Although he has done extensive doctoral work in Clinical Psychology and Educational Leadership, his own years as an intense child have contributed the most to his understanding of the needs of children with immense life force and how to awaken them to their greatness.

Though The Nurtured Heart Approach® began as a means for helping challenging children, all parents and educators, even those with well-behaved children, can benefit from learning how to inspire thriving relationships. He welcomes you to the Nurtured Heart Approach® and in finding a new path to greatness.

  • Results with a population of first offenders in the court system
  • Results using the approach in educational settings

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe and utilize concepts that yield full understanding of the dynamics of intense children and how to systematically shift the life force of a child to a default of greatness.
  • Explain why conventional methods of parenting, therapy and teaching often fail with intense children, despite the best of intentions.
  • Shift a challenging child to using his or her intensity in successful ways, even if the child is diagnosed with ADHD, ODD or is difficult in other ways, and regardless of the child’s age and level of severity.
  • Apply a methodology to creating experiences of success that are more powerful and more extensive than traditional approaches.
  • Utilize strategies to avoid the traps of accidentally rewarding negativity while still upholding a perfect level of accountability for the child.

DOES AN APPROACH MAKE A DIFFERENCE?…YES!

Tolson Elementary in Tucson, Arizona used to have the highest rate of suspensions in the district (eight percent of the total 336 in a district with over 60 schools). In the 7 years since using The Nurtured Heart Approach school-wide there have been no suspensions, no referrals to the court system, no referrals for ADHD evaluations and no new children on medications. That in a Title I school of over 500 students with over 80% free and reduced lunch. Also, need for costly special education services is down from a prior level of 15% of the student population to now only 1.2% and teacher attrition is down from over 50% per year to zero...along with zero bullying. Better yet, there have been dramatic rises in all the standardized test scores. Children who systematically experience their "inner wealth" will manifest success by wanting to be great students and by wanting to make great choices, despite the child’s home situation. The Nurtured Heart Approach will help you to accomplish this and more.

Tucson Head Start adopted The Nurtured Heart Approach  for use in all 80 classrooms for a total of over 2,000 children after successfully piloting the approach the previous year. They went from a disproportionately high level of referrals to the mental health system in previous years to a current level of “NO” referrals since. This outcome has created a great savings of human and fiscal resources, many of the most intense and challenging children have become the best and brightest and observers report that the other children are flourishing well beyond normal expectations.

A Tucson program for first offenders adopted the approach after experiencing that other approaches hadn’t made a difference. In fact the entire county’s statistics showed nearly a 50% rate of recidivism and those who reoffended went on to an average of 6 subsequent crimes of increasing severity.  Previous programs in the county had not made a significant difference, also showing close to a 40% rate of recidivism. Once adopting The Nurtured Heart Approach the court’s statistics showed that now only one in 6 children re-offended and those who did had an average of only one “lesser” crime, inferring an impact on even the toughest cases.
