Understanding Dissociation and Using Brainspotting with Dissociative Clients to Improve Overall Health

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with BioLateral sound, which is deep, direct, powerful yet focused and containing.

Brainspotting identifies activated eye positions designated as Brainspots. Located through either one or both eyes, Brainspots are observed from either the “Inside Window” of the clients felt sense and/or the “Outside Window” of the clients’ reflexive responses (i.e., blink, eye twitches or wobbles, pupil dilation, quick breaths and subtle body shifts). Students will first learn the phenomenological approach that underpins strategies for Brainspotting, followed by strategies for identifying and processing Brainspots. Attention will be given to the utilization and integration of Brainspotting into ongoing treatment, including highly dissociative clients. Brainspotting is adaptable to almost all areas of specialization.

Brainspotting provides therapists with powerful tools which enable their patients to quickly and effectively focus and process through the deep brain sources of many emotional, somatic and performance problems.

This workshop is a Midwest Brainspotting Institute Brown Bag workshop for those trained in Brainspotting and wanting to learn more about dissociation. Presenter will educate about signs of dissociation that may be impacting client’s overall well-being and how one might use Brainspotting as a powerful tool to become aware of how clients are stuck in unhealthy habits and how specific Brainspotting skills can be used to support client’s getting unstuck and taking action to improve their overall health.

Presenter

Josh Delahan, LCSW
I have been working with children, families, adults and groups since 1997. Currently, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and work with a variety of clientele. Psychological trauma and attachment are two of my specialties. I am trained in Brainspotting (Level 2 with pending certification), EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, HeartMath, the Stress Model and Family Attachment Narrative Therapy. In the past, I have been an AODA counselor and created and directed an AODA day treatment center that focused on treatment as well as a social/emotional/academic curriculum. I also teach Direct Social Work Practice and Trauma Counseling at UW-Milwaukee to MSW grad-students as well as provide Trauma-Informed Care trainings to schools and social service agencies. My continuing studies of the brain, trauma, attachment, relationships, and mindfulness inform my style of care and help me to individualize treatment for a diverse client-base.
