Sexual Attitudes Reassessment Building Sexual Health Competence

If you are a New York Social Worker or any student or person that does not require Continuing Education Credits please click here to register.

A Sexual Attitudes Reassessment (SAR) workshop is a process-oriented seminar designed to improve professional interactions with clients representing the broad spectrum of human sexuality. Participants will identify biases toward, and identifying structural obstacles to engagement with, people of color, alternative sexual preferences, LGBTQ status and religious beliefs. Self-awareness of attitudes, values, feelings, and beliefs about a wide range of human sexual experience often dictates clinical engagement. Comparison and analysis of the mental health counselor and social worker’s incoming beliefs with research based knowledge and clinically validated models of engagement reduces iatrogenic complications in treatment and improves clinical outcomes. A SAR is not a traditional academic experience nor is it psychotherapy directed toward the resolution of personal problems. It is a small group learning experience focused on the clinician’s individual needs to move emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and psychologically into a zone of greater knowing, acceptance, and tolerance of human sexuality in all of its possible dimensions. Among the topics the SAR addresses are sexuality across the lifespan, masturbation, shared sexual behavior, ethics, sexuality and physical disabilities, anatomy and physiology, the impact of religion on sexuality and many others.
